Ira H. Raphaelson JD '77

Ira Raphaelson is Chair of the Northwestern Law Board. He has served on the Board since 2004, joining the Executive Committee in 2008. Since graduating Law School, Ira has participated in the governance aspects of law from the perspective of general counsel, defense attorney, author, lecturer and prosecutor. He is currently the Executive Vice President and Global General Counsel of Las Vegas Sands Corp. where he is responsible for the legal and compliance functions of the global leader in developing and managing integrated resorts.

From February 2006 until joining LVS in November 2011, Ira was Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of Scientific Games Corporation, a leading lottery and gaming company. Before becoming General Counsel of SGC, Ira practiced for almost thirty years – as a law firm partner for 13 years and as a state and federal prosecutor for 16 years before that. In private practice, he represented some of the world’s largest companies and a number of prominent public officials and executives. As part of his government service, Ira spent 3 years in the Cook County States Attorney’s Office and a decade in the US Attorney’s Office in Chicago (serving as US Attorney in 1989-90).

In 1991, the first President Bush appointed and the Senate confirmed Ira to serve as Special Counsel for Financial Institutions within the Justice Department, where he also served as Counselor to Attorney General William Barr. He has worked extensively on cross-border compliance issues including gaming for much of his career and is a nationally recognized author and lecturer on corporate governance, anti-money laundering, and the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.
