The Pope & John Lecture Series on Professionalism

The Pope & John Lecture Series on Professionalism, which focuses on the many dimensions of a lawyer’s professional responsibility, including legal ethics, public service, professional civility, pro bono representation, and standards of conduct, was established in 1991 by the Chicago firm of Pope & John Ltd.


Perspectives from General Counsel: Hear from distinguished General Counsel, in a moderated discussion with Dean Daniel B. Rodriguez, as they share their perspectives on professionalism and ethical issues.

                 H. Carol Bernstein (JD ’85)
Vice President, Secretary and General Counsel, Cabot Microelectronics Corporation

H. Carol Bernstein has served as Vice President, Secretary and General Counsel at Cabot since August 2000. From January 1998 until joining Cabot, Ms. Bernstein served as the General Counsel and Director of Industrial Technology Development of Argonne National Laboratory, which is operated by the University of Chicago for the United States Department of Energy. From May 1985 until December 1997, she served in various positions with the IBM Corporation, culminating in serving as an Associate General Counsel, and was the Vice President, Secretary and General Counsel of Advantis Corporation, an IBM joint venture. Ms. Bernstein received her B.A. from Colgate University and her J.D. from Northwestern University; she is a member of the Bar of the States of Illinois and New York.




 

Timothy Bryant (JD ’89)
General Counsel, Adams Street Partners, LLC

Tim Bryant is a Partner and the General Counsel of Adams Street Partners, the global private equity investment firm based in Chicago, with offices in Beijing, Boston, London, Menlo Park, Munich, New York, Singapore, and Tokyo. Mr. Bryant leads the firm’s legal group and is responsible for all legal aspects of the firm’s operations. He is also responsible for the firm’s global regulatory compliance program and coordinates all transactional aspects of the firm’s fundraising and investing activities. Mr. Bryant joined Adams Street in 2009 after practicing law for twenty years, including fourteen years as a partner at McDermott Will & Emery in its Chicago and Menlo Park offices. After law school, Mr. Bryant clerked for the Honorable James B. Zagel of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Mr. Bryant graduated from Northwestern University, BA 1986, and from Northwestern Pritzker School of Law, JD 1989, where he was an editor of the Law Review.




 

Kathleen Cronin (JD ’89)
Managing Director and General Counsel, CME Group

Kathleen Cronin serves as a Senior Managing Director, General Counsel & Corporate Secretary of CME Group, where she is responsible for leading the company’s Legal, Market Regulation, Internal Audit, Corporate Compliance and Risk Management functions. Before joining CME Group in 2002, Ms. Cronin served as corporate counsel at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP for 11 years, where she advised clients in connection with public and private securities offerings, mergers and acquisitions and general corporate matters. She also served as Chief Counsel/Corporate Finance for Sara Lee Corp., advising the company on a range of matters, including international acquisitions, divestitures, joint ventures and financing activities. Ms. Cronin earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology, summa cum laude, from Boston College in 1985 and a JD degree, cum laude, from Northwestern University School of Law in 1989.




Andrew Polovin (JD ’01)
General Counsel, Uptake

Andy Polovin serves as Uptake's General Counsel and Corporate Secretary. He is responsible for and oversees all legal, regulatory, oversight, and compliance matters at Uptake. Prior to joining Uptake, Mr. Polovin served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Northern District of Illinois. where he investigated and prosecuted federal crimes from inception through appeal, including white collar crime, cyber-crime, fraud, narcotics offenses, gang activity, violent crime, and others. Prior to joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Mr. Polovin was an equity partner at Bartlit Beck Herman Palenchar & Scott LLP, one of the nation’s leading trial boutiques. After graduating from law school, he served as a law clerk to the Honorable Joel M. Flaum, then-Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Mr. Polovin received a Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude, from Colgate University in Hamilton, New York. He graduated magna cum laude and Order of the Coif from Northwestern University School of Law in Chicago where he served as Associate Editor of the Northwestern Law Review.
